Vanity seems to have a socio-cultural, and a somewhat socio-political, importance after all. Particularly healthy hair, which has a powerful impact on how other people would initially view us. For this reason, hair salons have become viable businesses throughout the years. Hairstyle has become more than just a statement, it has developed into a necessity as well. And a good number of years into the new millennium, people have become more conscious about growing healthy hair.
But contrary to popular belief, professional hair treatments are not that essential to guarantee for us a lock of healthy hair. There are things we could do at home to have that beautiful healthy hair that we will all be proud to wear, and there is no need to spend much money on salons and hair clinics. Here are some do-it-yourself tips:
1. Regularly trim your hair. Your hair suffers a lot of strain from daily rigors. Split-ends are natural occurrences which, if left unchecked, would make combing a damaging habit. Trim your hair often to preserve its beauty. You’d be taking out the rough ends and bringing back the bounce of your healthy hair.
2. Try to avoid heating equipment of any kind, such as blow dryers, curling irons, hot rollers, and crimpers. Heat deprives the hair of much needed moisture and drains the water molecules inside each strand. Water is integral for healthy hair, as it nourishes it to give it strength against stress.
3. Eat a balanced diet. The rationale behind this is quite simple. If you won’t be able to feed your body with the proper nutrients, neither will you be able to feed your hair with the same. Healthy hair has its nutritional needs as well.
4. Avoid using perms and peroxide on your hair. These chemicals are detrimental to healthy hair, because they tend to break down each strand’s structure before rebuilding it artificially.
5. Regularly condition your hair depending on its kind. If your hair is damp and dry, condition it weekly. Otherwise, do it at least once a month. Conditioning is essential because it is a relaxing and reinvigorating experience for your hair. Habitual conditioning can most definitely bring about healthy hair.
Healthy hair, being a social brand of our beings, can help build our self-esteem and make our relationship with others a smoother process. For this reason alone, having healthy hair should be pursued with enthusiasm and commitment.
