The first thing that most people notice about us isn’t our soulful eyes, or our almost perfect facial bone structure, or the build of our body. They notice the quality of our skin. Indeed, smooth and silky have been equated with healthy skin, and this has become a fascination for many people.
Additionally, a healthy skin can help bring about a healthy life. The skin, after all, is the body’s armor, the outer layer of our tissues that protect the latter from pollutants and other adverse external factors.
So what are the secrets to healthy skin?
1. Drink lots of water. Water deficiency is the number one cause of skin degeneration. Skin elasticity is dependent on water that is retained. Avoid dehydrating products like alcohol, coffee and soda. Pure water is what a healthy skin needs.
2. Reduce stress. Remember what older folks used to say? Don’t frown, least you develop wrinkles prematurely? Well, there is indeed a medical explanation for this. Stress slows down the production of certain hormones that are otherwise beneficial for the dermis. Avoid stressful activities so that you may attain or preserve healthy skin.
3. Exercise. Not only will a good workout prepare our body for optimal performance, it would also pave the way for healthy skin. Perspiration is always a good outlet for those pollutants that have accumulated beneath the epidermis, which are usually the causes for rashes, acne and other skin abnormalities.
4. Use a good moisturizer. A good moisturizer will rid the skin of unwanted contaminants, and supplement it with a helpful dosage of Vitamins A, C and E, all of which are vital to achieve healthy skin. Try to moisturize your skin at least once a day, preferably before sleeping.
5. Sleep early. Losing sleep can be stressful, and as discussed above, is completely detrimental against healthy skin. Additionally, sleeping on time would mean waking up properly, minus the unsightly eye bags. This would mean more time to enjoy the morning sun, and as well all know, early morning sunlight is a fertile source of Vitamin E.
6. Go natural. Excessive makeup can only damage your skin, what with the many chemical compounds involved. As much as possible, go makeup-free and allow your skin to breathe. Also, if you have no recourse but to wear make-up, clean your face thoroughly as soon as you get home.
These are just some of the essential steps that can be taken to have healthy skin. Many have said that our skin is the canvass of our lives, so we might as well make it a masterpiece through an earnest pursuit of having healthy skin that we could be proud of.
